Conditions for accessing the Black Sea Wave Energy Atlas 

  1. The Wave Energy Atlas located on this server is only freely available for academic research purposes. Commercial use of the data is prohibited.
  2. Research is understood as any project organised by a university, scientific institute or similar (private or institutional), for non-commercial research purposes only. A necessary condition for the recognition of non-commercial purposes is that all the results obtained are openly available at delivery costs only, without any delay linked to commercial objectives, and that the research itself is submitted for open publication.
  3. Even if care is taken while preparing the Wave Energy Atlas, it can not be guaranteed that the data is correct under all conditions; No liability is assumed for errors or omissions in any of the data or for any loss or damage caused by its use.
  4. Anyone who retrieves data from the Wave Energy Atlas accepts responsibility for reporting these conditions to all data users.
  5. The data at the Wave Energy Atlas must not be provided to third parties in whole or in part without our permission.
  6. Any form of publication (e.g; articles, proceedings paper or written scientific work) based on all or a part of the Wave Energy Atlas must contain a reference to this project on the obtained data.

Some warnings can be listed as follows:

    • In this study, a wave hindcast model (SWAN) including the entire Black Sea was developed and some wind and wave parameters were accumulated between 1979 and 2009.
    • In addition, a nested wave hindcast model (SWAN) system focusing on the south-western coasts of the Black Sea was developed and for three sub-domains (Sinop SD1, Filyos SD2 and Karaburun SD3) in this region some wind and wave parameters were accumulated between 1979 and 2009.
    • For the main domain containing the entire Black Sea, the model has a calculated time step of 30 minutes and a spatial resolution of 1/15 ° x 1/15 °, which is uniform across both sides. All spatial and location-based outputs were accumulated in a 30 minute temporal resolution.
    • For Sinop SD1 Domain, the calculated time interval for the nested SWAN model was set to 10 minutes and the spatial resolution is 0.00625 ° x 0.00435 ° in both directions. All spatial outputs were accumulated over a 2-hour temporal resolution and station-based outputs in a 10-minute temporal resolution. Hence, the maps in the Wave Energy Atlas statistic in the this domain were produced using the 2-hour and station-based estimates based on the 10-minute accumulated data.
    • For Filyos SD2 Domain, the calculated time interval for the nested SWAN model was set to 30 minutes and the spatial resolution is 0.00568° x 0.00544° in both directions. All spatial outputs were accumulated over a 2-hour temporal resolution and station-based outputs in a 30-minute temporal resolution. Hence, the maps in the Wave Energy Atlas statistic in the this domain were produced using the 2-hour and station-based estimates based on the 30-minute accumulated data.
    • For Karaburun SD3 Domain, the calculated time interval for the nested SWAN model was set to 20 minutes and the spatial resolution is 0.00625° x 0.00435° in both directions. All spatial outputs were accumulated over a 2-hour temporal resolution and station-based outputs in a 20-minute temporal resolution. Hence, the maps in the Wave Energy Atlas statistic in the this domain were produced using the 2-hour and station-based estimates based on the 20-minute accumulated data.
    • The SWAN model forced with CFSR winds using GEBCO bathymetry involves shallow water effects and so Wave Atlas statistics provide validity in deep and shallow water regions.

Except for the location-based results presented here, because model computational domain resolution is very fine all the desired information or results (e.g wave roses, extreme design waves with different return periods etc.) based on the 31-year hindcast data in the 2-hour temporal resolution for any location in project area that better represents the whole coastal areas can be derived and provided to users.
